Coach's comments: "Our experience in the
30th edition of the KITT was something of a mixed bag: as a team we had a pretty
strong Saturday but underperformed a bit on Sunday. After the first day of
competition, we appeared in the running for a third straight team title in this
event. Match wins in close contests proved elusive the following day, however. Not to worry: we use this event as a scrimmage that gives us
the chance to check out our competition while gaining some valuable match play
experience early in the season. If we happen to place well as a team, that's a
bonus. We now know that we can compete with all of the teams that were assembled
for this tournament when we see them in dual match play. But we also come away
with a list of things our players and doubles teams need to work on in the weeks
ahead.
"Some highlights worth mentioning: Eliot Jia '06 made a
most auspicious Choate Tennis debut in winning the #4 draw without the loss of a
set. Captain Mark Goldberg enjoyed a great run, too, losing a close final to a
steady Deerfield player in the #3 singles division. Our doubles teams ran into
trouble in the semis, but given how little practice time the pairs had before
playing, they acquitted themselves pretty well. Doubles is something of a point
of pride in our program and we expect to get much stronger on this front as the
season progresses.
"We'll regroup now and look to the rest of the team to
join in the fun at our first scrimmage on Wednesday. The players outside our top
four are eager to compete. (Thanks to Ming Ong '05 and Angelo Coclanis '05 for
their support as our 'orange boys' this past weekend, by the way.)"

Coach's comments:
"Given the forecast for a rainy
afternoon, the Choate varsity and JV players were fortunate to complete 19
matches--some of them pro-sets and regular sets--against a squad from nearby
Hopkins School. This was just what we hope for in a scrimmage: a chance to get
accustomed to the dual match format and get pushed a bit while still racking up
the preponderance of the day's wins.
"We looked generally sharp in the doubles play--even
where we didn't win--and the Wild Boars dominated the singles other than in the
top two positions, where a pair of talented young players salvaged some pride
for the Hilltoppers. With no match scheduled for the weekend ahead of us, we now
have a full seven days to address some stroke deficiencies, fine tune doubles
strategies, tinker with the ladder perhaps, and prepare for next week's Loomis
match."

Coach's comments:
"Choate began its quest
for a fourth straight Founders League crown with a convincing defeat of the
Pelicans. This spring Loomis Chaffee fields a talented team, one almost as young
as our own, and so this was a good early-season test for us. In light of
continuing rain and cold weather, the match was moved to an indoor tennis club
in Rocky Hill--roughly halfway between Wallingford and Windsor--somewhat
neutralizing the Loomis home court advantage.
"The Wild Boars were on their games right out of the
gates, sweeping the doubles with four solid victories, including a terrific,
hard-fought tilt at #1. We realigned the top of our singles and doubles line-ups
in light of the practice sets the boys have been playing over the last week, and
the practice competition clearly paid off. In his debut at #1 singles, third
former Eliot Jia competed tenaciously and played very well in a loss to a boy
who must be counted among the top prep school tennis players in New England this
season. Eliot's teammates all prevailed in straight sets, though the scores
don't reveal just how competitive a few of these matches were. At #3, for
example, captain Mark Goldberg displayed his typical scrappiness in erasing a
0-5 deficit to take the first set and then the match. One court over, in the #2
singles, Mauricio Osorio found himself down a break in the first set before he
steeled his nerves and rattled off the final nine games. In all, the guys played
some tough tennis to dispatch their rivals."

Coach's comments: "In light of recent rain worthy of Noah, we began our face-off with
the Exonians indoors on the fast courts of our Johnson Athletic Center. Without
Mauricio Osorio in the ladder--he was in the health center with a virus--we had
to reconfigure doubles teams to three brand new pairings. Happily, all the work
we have invested in doubles communications and strategy paid off, as we
comfortably swept all three contests.
"The outdoor courts had become playable in the
meantime, thanks to the warm sunshine and gentle breezes that emerged after the
noon hour. Thus we spread out for eight singles matches on the Hunt Tennis
Center courts. Blue and Gold players Angelo Coclanis and Mark Goldberg quickly
won matches at #5 and #2, respectively, to extend the home team's lead. Then
Eliot Jia provided the clinching victory in a very competitive match at #1,
immediately followed by classmate Jeff Berry's second-set tiebreak win at #6.
Karl Blunden closed out his opponent at #3 minutes later, but when #4 Ming Ong
leveled his match at a set apiece, the coaches agreed to abbreviate the final
set to a tiebreak, since the hour was late and Choate already held a 6-0 lead in
the team scoring. Ming was unfortunate not to convert that tiebreak and we also
dropped a pair of exhibition matches as well. But we have to feel good about
beating a team that schooled us fairly thoroughly a year ago, especially without
our #2 player in action today.
"Next week brings three matches, so the boys have been
charged to rest up and get ahead on their schoolwork the remainder of the
weekend."

Coach's comments: "Spring finally sprung and the Simbsury weather--while a little cooler and breezier than what we left in Wallingford--was nearly ideal for tennis. Once again, our success in doubles set the tone for the day's play, as the top two pairs posted quick victories. We felt we had enough of a cushion heading into the singles to give our #1 Eliot Jia some much-needed rest in the middle of a stretch in which we are playing six interscholastic matches in eleven days. The remainder of the ladder competed well, each playing up a position for the second match in a row. Westminster's squad is young and eager and will only get tougher next year, as the Martlets will lose no seniors to graduation (their winner in the #6 match was a one-year exchange student). Although things got a little sloppy for us at the bottom of the roster, this invaluable match play experience will serve our own young team in good stead as the season progresses and we face inevitable adversity."

Coach's comments: "Temperatures in the 80s
set the stage for a friendly showdown between two undefeated teams. Fortunately,
Choate's doubles strength once again gave the home team the early edge. Special
kudos to the newly formed #3 tandem for rebounding from a 5-1 deficit; the Blue
and Gold pair never led until 8-7, but finally found a way to wear down the
opposition, taking the pro-set after saving multiple match points.
"The heart of our singles ladder quickly posted
straight-set victories to ensure the team win and preserve the Wild Boars'
unbeaten streak, though the Hoggers snared a very competitive #1 singles tilt as
well as a tight--and frustrating!--battle at #6 plus three exhibition matches.
This NMH squad is much improved over the 2002 version, with solid depth from an
influx of young talent. It will be fun to see our two teams face off again over
the course of the next few seasons."

Coach's comments: "Playing the second of back-to-back matches and the third contest in four days, the Wild Boars fought through their fatigue to defeat Cheshire in a cold late afternoon contest. For the fifth time in five dual matches this spring, the Choate pairs swept the doubles. But by the time the singles play rolled around, it was clear that our boys were tired and not playing their sharpest tennis. To their credit, the Cheshire players had something to do with this; our opponents were scrappy competitors who were resourceful in blunting the firepower of the visitors. Cheshire's #1 exhibited tremendous patience in wearing down Eliot Jia in two sets. At #2, Mauricio Osorio was engaged in a heated baseline battle, only to lose a close tiebreak played in lieu of the third set--the third time this season Choate dropped a point in the team scoring under such circumstances! Captain Mark Goldberg staged an effective comeback from 0-3 in the final set in the #3 singles, finally harnessing his attacking game to finish off a maddeningly steady opponent. The rest of our line-up prevailed in straight sets, but not without having been pushed a bit in the process."

Coach's comments: "Though our roster was missing two starters--captain Mark Goldberg and Alex Yimoyines--the Wild Boars were in fine form against Trinity-Pawling on a very cool day in Wallingford. Coach's comments: "Following the Long Weekend break, the Wild Boars had to shake off some rust to dispatch a Rhinos squad that has improved impressively since we last saw them at the KITT. Taft played especially well in the doubles, and although we took the point, we also dropped our first doubles match of the dual meet season. The singles play all fell Choate's way, though the #5 slugfest between two well-matched southpaws was close throughout and ultimately was decided by back-to-back tiebreaks that Angelo Coclanis managed to win to preserve his undefeated record."

Coach's comments: "This was a tough day
for the Wild Boars. We got thumped, in places due to our own lackluster
performance and elsewhere because of the superior play of our opponents.
Brunswick's squad is deep and talented--easily the strongest team we have yet
seen. We ought to have secured the doubles point; we nailed down the #2 match is
short order, but had trouble getting started at #1 and let chances slip away at
#3. The singles play that followed all went the vistors' way, though there were
some noteworthy performances from Choate players: Karl and Angelo each forced
third sets and Mauricio staged comebacks from 0-3 in the first set and 0-5 in
the second to keep things tight in his baseline war of attrition. Angelo was
very nearly the comeback king of the season, rallying to take the second set
from a 0-6, 0-4 deficit. He nearly repeated that feat in the third, stringing
together a couple of games at 1-5, but his luck ran out.
"After opening our 2003 campaign with seven straight
wins, we are reminded that it's a lot less fun to lose, but we hope to use this
experience as fuel for our weekend showdown with arch-rival Deerfield. As our
two schools are both among the top-ranked Class 'A" schools this season the
outcome of this match will have tournament ramifications. We'll need to be
sharper than we were today in order to win, but we'll do our best to get back on
a winning track."

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars bounced
back from a disastrous midweek outing to beat a very solid Deerfield team by
dominating the singles play. The Big Green's top two tandems played some
inspired doubles to secure the first team point, winning a pair of close
pro-sets. We had chances in both of the contests, but Deerfield played the big
points better.
"As the singles unfolded, what we expected to be a
tight showdown turned out to be just that. We needed four of six matches to win,
and when we started dropping sets here and there, our prospects could quickly
have turned bleak. Fortunately for the home team, the players in the odd
positions stepped it up early, as we pulled ahead 3-1 in the team scoring with
straight-set victories and #1 and #3 and a lopsided three-set win at #5. (Mark
Goldberg's win at #3 was especially satisfying, as the senior captain avenged
his two-set loss in the KITT final to the same opponent.) Dropping a
tension-filled #6 match shifted the momentum ever so slightly back Deerfield's
way, but not long after Karl Blunden's win in two close sets at #4 clinched it
for the Blue and Gold. The final match of the day was a baseline battle at #2,
finally won in the gloaming by Mauricio Osorio in a third-set tiebreak."

Coach's comments: "Moving this contest three days earlier was beneficial for both teams, so we snuck in a rare Tuesday match on K-O's fast indoor courts. Our top two doubles pairs were sharp in giving us an early advantage with the doubles point, and we stopped the #3 pro-set, which was on serve, to get the singles underway. The Wyverns fought hard, winning at #1 and battling particularly tenaciously at #2 and #3, but the heart of our ladder stepped it up brilliantly to secure another League win for the Wild Boars. Mauricio Osorio played his finest match of the season to defeat a heretofore unbeaten opponent in yet another baseline war. Captain Mark Goldberg summoned another gutsy performance in finishing off a scrappy and consistent K-O #3 in the third set. Karl Blunden made quick work of his opponent at #4 to keep the match momentum in our favor. We abandoned the final two scoring matches given the lateness of the hour."

Coach's comments: "Without the services of captain Mark Goldberg--who was taking an AP exam--the Wild Boars extended their domination of boys' tennis in the Founders League for a 30th straight win. After quick victories in the doubles, the home team ensured the team result with straight set wins in the top four slots. #5 Ming Ong struggled before shutting down his opponent with some solid deep volleys in the final two games of the third set, but Jeff Berry lost two tight sets, allowing the Fighting Episcopalians their sole point."

Coach's comments: "Although
we fully expected to take this match, we also knew that Andover would be hungry
for an upset. This team is always 'up' to play us and we certainly had our hands
full at one point in the contest. The three doubles pro-sets comfortably fell
our way and perhaps the ease with which we took the opening point led to some
complacency.
"In the singles, a pair of lopsided wins at #2 and #3
extended the CRH lead to 3-0, but then complications unfolded. At #1, Eliot saw
an early 4-2 lead slip away into a straight set loss against a consistent
counterpuncher (who is also a 9th grader). Meanwhile at #4, Karl held break
points while up 2-5 and 15-40, but lost the opening set when his opponent began
to employ an effective moonballing game to derail the South African's rhythm. On
the next court, #5 Angelo Coclanis struggled to find control in the swirling
wind and after losing the first-set tiebreak, he dropped the second set in short
order. The swing point of the day turned out to be the #6 match, wherein Ming
Ong recovered from a second-set lapse to get an early break in the third; he
closed out the match by uncorking four scorching first serves. Meanwhile, back
at #4 Karl had leveled his showdown at a set apiece and fought his way to a win
from a 1-3 final set deficit by playing tennis he described as 'brilliant,
inventive, and generally excellent.'
"We feel a bit relieved to have passed this test and
are looking forward to a lighter week capped by the tournament next weekend."

Coach's comments: "Aside from a bit of a
stumble at #1 doubles, it was a good day at the office for the Choate boys. Even
though this Bearcats squad is not as strong as Hotchkiss teams of the past--and
was missing two top players due to injury--the visitors fought hard and made us
work for the win. #1 Eliot Jia '06 won a tiebreak immediately after losing one
to preserve the shutout and Ming Ong took the final six games for a three-set
win at #5. We opted to rest Mark in the doubles and Angelo in the singles to
give our alternate doubles pairs and singles player Jeff Berry a bit more match
play in a 'real' contest this week and it turned out well.
"We now turn our attention to the weekend's tournament.
We'll need to win two team matches on Saturday and one on Saturday to claim the
championship, so we have our work cut out for us. It ought to be fun."

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars won this very competitive match with some gritty play when it counted. We came out strong in the doubles, quickly winning at #1 and #3 to clinch the first team point. Third form wunderkind Eliot Jia was on fire at #1, giving us a second point shortly thereafter. His #4 teammate Karl Blunden was not far behind in racking up a third point, but his victory offset the trouble we soon ran into at the #5 and #6 singles positions. In the #5 tilt, Angelo Coclanis very nearly dug his way out of a deep hole, only to lose a close third set. Choate then led 3-2 with Mauricio Osorio and Mark Goldberg still on court; the former had won a first-set tiebreak but the latter had lost one. These were tense and generally well-played matches that would decide which of the two squads would advance. Mauricio managed to harness his baseline attack to wear out his opponent in the second set, thus relieving Mark--whom we believe would have pulled it out in three sets!--and securing our berth in the semis later in the afternoon against Deerfield. It was a good win over a solid and classy Groton team."

Coach's comments: "Our performance against
Deerfield in the New England tournament was in some ways the reverse of the
match we played against the Big Green just two weeks before. In the earlier
encounter, we dropped the doubles point but dominated the singles play, taking
five of six matches contested. This time around, we fired on all cylinders to
nab the doubles point without much resistance, but seemed tired and flat against
virtually the same singles line-up we had handled before (the #5 and #6 on the
D.A. roster had flipped positions).
"In the five years we've played in this team tournament
format, we've consistently lost tough matches by just one point--a frustrating
pattern, to say the least! Deerfield deserved this win; its senior-heavy team
was a little hungrier to knock off Choate on our home turf before an
enthusiastic Reunion Weekend crowd."

Coach's comments: "Missing our senior captain due to a sixth form field trip, we couldn't field depth sufficient to contend with this strong team, coming off a victory in the Class "B" New England tournament. Thus what was a tight 4-3 match a year ago against virtually the same line-up turned into a quick win for the GFA squad."
