Coach's comments: "We see this early season tournament just as a chance to get some good match play under our belts and scope out our traditional rivals. I don't get too concerned with wins and losses at this point. When we end up as one of the top teams, though, that's a nice bonus. What's most important is that we now have a better sense of what we're doing well and what we need to work on, so as we head into the heart of the dual match season, hopefully this experience will be advantageous."

Coach's comments: "We never really got out of the starting blocks today. The Horace Mann team was solid, but we ought to have posted a better showing than we did. Today's results reflect the relative youth and inexperience of this year's Choate team, but hopefully this match will be good preparation for league competition, which begins next Wednesday."

Coach's comments: "After losing a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Pelicans in the first round of last year's New England tournament, this match was sweet revenge indeed. It was a weaker Loomis squad than we've seen in recent years, but the Choate boys played well and didn't let their opponents into the match. We look forward to a good challenge up at Exeter this Saturday; the Exonians defeated Loomis Chaffee by a similar 7-0 score last Saturday."

Coach's comments: "This was a match where the doubles results clearly created some momentum for the home team. Choate had early leads in those pro-sets--we were up 4-0 at #1, for example--that we squandered and we never really recovered. That said, Exeter has some impressive depth in the middle of their line-up, but we only got one of the matches we were counting on toward the top and bottom of the singles ladder."

Coach's comments: "We won today because of two D's: doubles and depth. Success in the opening doubles matches secured some momentum for us, as well as what turned out to be the decisive point in the team scoring. And the lower half of our singles ladder nailed down the Choate victory with some savvy play against overmatched opponents. Andrew Jacobi had his chances at #1, mounting a spirited comeback from 2-5 down in the third set, but it was not to be. This NMH match wasn't a pretty win for us, but we won't refuse it!"

Coach's comments: "The Wild Boars braved the cold and damp conditions and soundly defeated League rival Trinity-Pawling. The T-P squad was less experienced than their Choate counterparts and our depth was a clear advantage in this contest. It was a good transition from Long Weekend to our next showdown against Cheshire--a team we expect to be pretty solid."

Coach's comments: "I had predicted that the doubles would be critical in this match-up, and that indeed proved to be the case. Kudos to our #1 team for rebounding from a 4-7 deficit in the pro-set to utterly dominate the tiebreak (winning all but one of the points played--and even that one, many spectators would claim!) and establishing momentum for the Wild Boars heading into the singles play. In the end, our depth again carried the day. Of the thirteen matches played, the Cheshire boys prevailed in only three of them, although in those their wins were decisive. Jeremy Zuidema's tenacious battling broke the visitors' lock on the top three singles matches, as he finally found his attacking form late in the second set and preserved an unbeaten streak against a childhood opponent. This was a satisfying team win against a solid Class 'A' opponent--a victory that hopefully will help us earn a berth in the New England playoffs next month."

Coach's comments: "This win was satisfying, even though it wasn't entirely pretty; we got very sloppy in places. At #1 doubles, for example, the Wild Boars squandered a 7-4 lead and seven match points before taking the pro-set in a tiebreaker. And James Elsworth had chances to close it out a bit earlier in the #3 singles match, too, before he nailed it down. And inexplicably, Sam Epstein--who hasn't lost in weeks--never even showed up for his singles match! That said, though, we performed well as a team against a solid Taft squad."

Coach's comments: "The Choate boys seem to be getting grooved in both singles and doubles at this point in the season. Even in the matches we lost today, we competed very well--fighting tenaciously throughout. Kudos to our two sixth formers--Messrs. Fair and Nathan--for not dropping a game in their singles. We are heading into a handful of tough contests ahead: Deerfield, Kent, Kingswood-Oxford, Andover, and Hotchkiss all loom in the next two weeks, and we'll need to be sharp to take our share of these matches, for each one is winnable, but each one should be challenging, too."

Coach's comments: "This was both an exciting and frustrating day, as each of the seven points in play was hotly contested. We knew heading into the showdown that the singles matches all would be competitive and that the doubles would again be a crucial swing point. That turned out to be the case, though it worked in the Big Green's favor. Deerfield cruised at #3 and Choate bested the #1 pair in a tighter pro-set. The #2 doubles match progressed on serve and appeared to turn on a long point early in the 4-5 game, when there was an egregious breach of sportsmanship, as one of the Deerfield pair made significant and repeated contact with the net during the point when running down a drop shot, but the D.A. team was either unaware of the rule or blatantly disregarded its violation and apparently had no interest in being educated on the matter. After this point, the Wild Boars #2 players had trouble with just about every part of their game, especially finding the service box with their serves, and dropped the pro-set. The singles competition was very close, as predicted, and momentum swung back and forth between the two schools repeatedly. At one point it was conceivable Choate might even be able to sweep the singles. But after some very close sets in each match, the odd-numbered contests started to fall the home team's way and Stefan Patrikis saw his one-set lead slip away at #4. At #2 Jeremy Zuidema wore down his opponent with a skillful barrage of penetrating groundstrokes and savvy net play (though his foot movement did take a walkabout in the second set). And in the final match of the day at #6, Sam Epstein found his range on the forehand after spotting his counterpart the first set and took it in a tiebreak that was played in lieu of a complete third set.
"This would have been a nice win for us today, but we'll have to hope for a rematch opportunity in the playoffs, should both teams find themselves meeting there. We'd certainly like another shot at this squad!"

Coach's comments: "This Westminster squad--much improved since we saw them last at the Kingswood tournament--fought gamely in both the doubles and the singles, especially in the bottom part of the ladder. We had our hands full in this match in a way we hadn't expected to, but by establishing a strong presence in the doubles and posting easy wins at #1 and #2 singles, the pressure was on the Martlets to come up with some big wins. They did just that at #4 and #6 singles, but Choate prevailed in three sets at #3 and #5 after a couple of very slow starts. We've now bested half of the Founders League and will head to Kent for an important League match on Wednesday."

Coach's comments: "The Choate squad has been on the road a lot this spring, and the Kent match was the last of four consecutive away contests for us. Happily, the Wild Boars were 'hard-traveling heroes' today in pulling out an important team victory. We headed into the match knowing that only Choate and Kent were undefeated in Founders League competition this season and that by day's end, just one team would have its unblemished record intact. Once again, success in the doubles set the tone for the singles to follow. The top two pairs split the pro-sets, as the Kent #1s and Choate #2s each posted tight 8-6 wins, but Choate won the lower two doubles matches more easily and hence the doubles point.
Adjusting to Kent's red clay was a tricky proposition, especially since the courts played very slowly due to the light drizzle throughout the doubles and the early part of the singles play. Our top two, Messrs. Jacobi and Zuidema, competed well but fell to their opponents once the matches were moved indoors due to lightning. Steve Fair and Sam Epstein both took down their counterparts in three sets at #5 and #6, respectively, to give Choate a 3-2 lead in the team scoring. Then to finish things off, James Elsworth and Stefan Patrikis prevailed in the heart of the singles line-up within thirty seconds of each other, clinching the win for the visitors. Each was probably helped by the move indoors to a faster court: James rebounded from a set down and Stefan recovered from a 1-4 deficit in the second set.
In our busiest week of the season, we've acquitted ourselves very well thus far, toughing out spirited challenges from two talented teams. We're not out of the wood yet, as Kingswood-Oxford and Andover are just around the corner, but we ought to be able to approach those rivals with a good bit of confidence in hand."

Coach's comments: "The guys worked hard to make this a smoother victory than we had anticipated. To repeat a now-common refrain, doubles set the tone for the day. The Choate #3 pair won easily and the #2 tandem avenged its lopsided loss in the KITT final by winning the final eight games with some stellar volleying and returns of serve. Choate also led the #1 doubles match, up a break, when it was called to start the singles. Comfortable wins for the Wild Boars at #2, #4, and #5 singles enabled the coaches to stop the #1 and #3 contests as they were heading into third sets so that both teams could keep themselves fresh for matches tomorrow.
This win over the Wyverns puts us in the driver's seat to win the first Founders League title of the new millennium. League rivals Hotchkiss and Avon Old Farms are still ahead of us the next two Wednesdays, as is non-league opponent Andover tomorrow. Our squad seems to be firing on all cylinders now, though, and looks finely tuned heading into a couple of matches in the next five days that--should we prevail--could secure us one of the top seeds in the New England tournament in a week's time."

Coach's comments: "This match is the proverbial 'one that got away.' We surely had our chances to win today, but Andover escaped with the victory by the narrowest of margins. I was most disappointed with our exceptionally poor showings at #1 and #2 doubles, especially after such terrific play in yesterday's doubles action. Our failure to win the doubles point added a bit of pressure we did not need heading into singles matches that we expected to be close.
At #1 singles, Andover's Andrew Merle turned an ankle in only the second game of the match and was unable to continue; Choate got the point, but Andrew Jacobi was very much looking forward to the opportunity to play out this match. At #2 Jeremy Zuidema put together some forceful tennis at just the right times to prevail in two taut sets. And Stephen Fair, though frustrated by his dropping the second set, won handily in the third after hitting what seemed like several hundred overheads in the course of play. The Wild Boars dropped the remaining three matches--all of them tension-filled contests, and two of which went the distance in three sets.
This loss was painful, but there are clearly some lessons to be gleaned from the experience; I hope we can use the memory of this match as motivation heading into the final two weeks of the season."

Coach's comments: "Brad Gilbert, former tour player and current coach of Andre Agassi, wrote a book on tennis called 'Winning Ugly' and that could have been the story of today's match. Even though we were favored to win this one, we also knew the Bearcats would be pumped up to take the match from us on their home courts if we gave them the opening. And give them an opening we did, with some rather undistinguished doubles play at the #1 and #2 positions. Thus far this season, losing the doubles point has proved too heavy a burden for us to overcome, but today we rallied effectively in the singles to claim victory.
Stefan Patrikis and captain Steve Fair posted easy wins to put us back ahead in the team scoring tally and Choate pulled ahead 3-1 as a hard-fought #6 singles match ended prematurely when the Hotchkiss player turned an ankle late in the second set--a most unfortunate way for us to get that point. Things tightened a bit when James Elsworth dropped his #3 contest in two very close sets and the last two showdowns at #1 and #2 headed for third sets. We were far too sloppy in these matches: in the #2 slot, Jeremy Zuidema was ahead by a set and a break, only to fall short in the third, while teammate Andrew Jacobi squandered a two-break lead in the first set to lose it 4-6, and gave back another break in the second before nailing that one down and then coasting through the third with some aggressive backcourt play to seal the win for the Wild Boars.
With only a much-depleted Avon team ahead of us on the dual match calendar, Choate now seems fairly likely to take sole possession of the Founders League boys' tennis crown for the 2000 season."

Coach's comments: "After a day's delay due to inclement weather, we couldn't have started this match any better: our top two pairs played some absolutely devastating doubles to take the opening point in convincing fashion. Once the singles was underway, it was clear that Milton would take the top two positions and Choate the bottom two, leaving #3 and #4 as the swing matches. After a competitive first set, James Elsworth went up two breaks early in the second for a 3-0 lead, but lost his confidence and the remaining games, experiencing considerable serving difficulty. In the #4 tilt, Choate suffered a bit of hard luck, it seems, as Stefan Patrikis had injured his right leg early in the doubles and was severely limited in his mobility against an opponent he'd ordinarily dismiss handily. Although Stefan fought valiantly to force a third set, the Mustangs won the match and with it the go-ahead point.
The contest had its share of highlights in the points we won: I doubt our doubles teams could have played any better than they did. Steve Fair beat a very solid #5 opponent comfortably, fulfilling his mid-season vow to lose no more singles matches. And at #6, Sam Epstein appeared to have regained his confidence--which had gone missing the last couple of weeks--in thrashing his counterpart 6-2, 6-2.
It was disappointing to lose a 4-3 heart-breaker in the quarterfinals of this tournament for the second year in a row, but most of our team will be back in 2001 and hopefully we'll make a better showing then!"

Coach's comments: "After an unpleasant day at Avon last year, it was nice to end the season on such an upbeat note this spring: the matches were played largely without incident (though one of the Avon coaches pulled his #5 man for tossing a racquet across two courts) and Choate won all twelve matches played at the varsity level (as well as all but one of the JV).
Given his recent match history, James Elsworth had a particularly satisfying win at #3 singles, with some decisive and aggressive play in the third set, getting a monkey off his back. And Jeremy Zuidema prevailed impressively in a hard-fought #2 contest.
We will finish the season with all three doubles teams playing in the New England Invitational here at Choate this Saturday."

Coach's comments: "After a generally damp and dour May, we finally had a spectacular day for tennis. Some late withdrawals from the doubles field enabled Choate to enter all three doubles pairs in the draw. Our play in the tournament was typical of our season: spectacular in places, but occasionally sloppy, too. This event is intended to be a fun day of tennis, however, and it proved to be just that for all involved. Once again, the Hunt Tennis Center proved to be a terrific venue in which to stage such a tournament."
